Samsung Galaxy A71, analysis: a huge screen and balance for an ambitious mid-range

Samsung Galaxy A71, analysis: a huge screen and balance for an ambitious mid-range

Little by little Samsung has been casting its smartphones from the A range as complete equipment, contained in price and very attractive visually. The new Samsung Galaxy A71 is the best example of all.

This huge smartphone of almost 7 inches opens a quad-camera while maintaining its great purchase arguments such as the screen or the striking design. In Engadget, we have already tested it thoroughly.
Lightweight and comfortable in hand despite its large size

The Samsung Galaxy A71 is no longer the company's largest terminal. That achievement has remained for the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Despite this, the 6.7 inches of the new mid-range of the Korean level is marked at the design level by its elongated format and large diagonal.

Despite that huge screen, the practical absence of frames around it and the contained width make the Samsung Galaxy A71 a comfortable smartphone to handle although large. From the front, its AMOLED panel with Gorilla Glass 3 protection is striking, but there is no differentiation there.

The design of the Samsung Galaxy A71 draws attention from both the front and the rear. And it weighs very little.

We do have it in the back. Although it may seem so from the care with which it has been worked, that area of the Samsung Galaxy A71 is made of plastic and not glass. Hence, for example, we do not have wireless charging on this phone. Or that its weight is so low for its size.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review Xataka Hole

These days using the Samsung Galaxy A71 on a daily basis, if you do not look at its technical sheet, it is not easy for the consumer to guess the material in which the back of this terminal is actually made. Perhaps the key clue has to be found in the frame, also made of plastic and where the use of this material is most evident.

However, for the day-to-day, I think this choice is a wise choice because it allows the weight of the Samsung Galaxy A71 to be only 179 grams, which makes it easier to handle. And it is appreciated. Another issue is that the consumer accepts without reluctance that for the official price higher than 450 euros, the use of polycarbonate is maintained no matter how well the finish is.

The finish of the Samsung Galaxy A71 is plastic both on the back and on the frame, something that in a smartphone above 400 euros it costs to accept

And it is that, on an aesthetic level, the treatment of the rear of the Samsung Galaxy A71 effectively makes this area pass as made of glass. The finish is shiny and with a curious and striking pattern in the four colours in which we can buy this new leading phone from the manufacturer's A range.

This rear part presents a slight curvature, already typical in smartphones of certain packaging and that, together with the rounded shapes of the joints between different parts, give the terminal softness to the touch and sight.

What is striking, in addition to the pattern according to the reflection of the light, on the back of the Samsung Galaxy A71, is the camera module, not hidden, with a rectangular shape and generously sized to house the quadruple-camera system that debuts this Samsung Galaxy A71 within this mid-range family.

From the part of connections, this Samsung Galaxy A71 has the power and volume control buttons on the right side, both well placed for its reach with natural gestures, and the face USB-C port on the lower frame, flanked by a single speaker (another detail that could be improved in this price range) and, surprise, a headphone port despite the thickness of the terminal is less than 8 mm.
SuperAMOLED screen: a guarantee to enjoy in style

A sure value of the Samsung terminals from a certain range is the screen. In this Samsung Galaxy A71, the 6.7-inch SuperAMOLED panel is its strongest element against the competition.

Once again, the AMOLED panel on the screen of a Samsung smartphone is its highlight

This screen offers a correct resolution for this range: 1080x2400 pixels, which gives us a pixel density that is close to 400 dpi, so the sharpness that we obtain both for day-to-day and for photography or video is more than enough.

The screen aspect ratio is 20: 9, very wide, which is optimal for consuming native video, web, or social media content. The SuperAMOLED panel offers high brightness, around 400 nits. With the "infinite" contrast of OLED technology, your visibility outdoors is correct. And indoors, the quality of the SuperAMOLED panel is huge for contrast and depth of blacks.

There are two colour modes available to personalize the experience with the Samsung Galaxy A71 panel. The one that came by default as soon as we turned on the terminal, the natural mode, we soon changed it to the more intense one, with which by adjusting the temperature somewhat, we finally achieve balanced colour reproduction with the intensity and experience for all kinds of situations.

This Samsung Galaxy A71 offers a high screen/body ratio, close to 88%. It is thanks to the reduced frames but also to the choice of the " hole " as a system to keep the secondary camera physically on the screen.

At the bottom of the screen, we have an integrated fingerprint reader, not ultrasonic but optical. Its effective speed of operation has little room for improvement and does not convey the fluidity that I consider necessary for a terminal of this price (and with the tremendous and fierce competition of today). In any case, complemented with face recognition, the Samsung Galaxy A71 can conclude that it offers a reliable biometric recognition system.

For biometric identification, it is best to combine the fingerprint reader on the screen with the identification of faces

Finally, we must mention the "always-on screen" mode, a consolidated and complete classic in the range of Samsung equipment. Quite a few options, one of the most on the market, without the terminal significantly affecting its autonomy.
Good hardware configuration

If in the end, we have had any doubts regarding the price we pay for this Samsung Galaxy A71, with the hardware configuration all of them are erased and we have to say that we are facing a terminal that performs very well.

We first see it on paper. The processor is an eight-core Snapdragon 730 that comes very well accompanied by 6 and 8 GB RAM configurations. And as internal storage space, we have 128 GB as standard that we can also decide to expand with microSD cards of up to 512 GB.

Other tests have left us figures of 2455 for Slingshot Extreme and 3532 for Slingshot. In Geekbench 5, this Samsung A71 scored 544 and 1683 points in the single and multi-core tests respectively.

If we move on to the real day-to-day experience with the terminal, these figures are endorsed in total fluidity for the range of the terminal, even with good performance in somewhat demanding games. You just have to make a technical stop in some very specific moments where we have appreciated some jerks but that we link directly with optimization on the way of Android 10 with the interesting Samsung One UI 2.0 layer on it.

In the connectivity section, this Samsung Galaxy A71 has Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac and yes, FM radio .
Great autonomy for a large terminal

The Samsung Galaxy A71 follows in the wake of its corresponding model of the previous generation and its battery, with a capacity of 4,500 mAh, is one of its standouts and things to show off. Let's see if he does it on a day-to-day basis as well and not just on paper.

With regular use of the Samsung Galaxy A71, we have measured more than 7 hours of the screen and exceeded a day and a half of use without problems

In our test of almost two weeks using the Samsung Galaxy A71 as the main terminal, with the usual use we give the iPhone repair Vancouver, focused on notifications, some games, streaming music, and a lot of social networks and mail, the battery has never left us stranded well into the morning of the second day of use without charging. Even on weekends, with somewhat less sporadic activity and more continuous with games, for example, we have been able to maintain from Saturday morning until early Monday without actually needing a load on the terminal.

In screen hours, we have exceeded an average of seven and a half hours, a considerable figure for the diagonal of this device. We are not facing an amazing autonomy but it is clearly above average.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review Xataka Charger

The good performance of the Samsung Galaxy A71 at the autonomy level is correctly complemented by fast charging. For this purpose, Samsung places a 25 W charger inside the package that completes the battery from 5 to 100% (with connectivity and active notifications) in just over 70 minutes. To reach 50%, in an emergency, it only takes 28 minutes.
Android 10 at the controls of the Samsung Galaxy A71

The Samsung Galaxy A71 hits the market in a big way also in the software section. Right out of the box we can enjoy Android 10, yes, seasoned by the new Samsung One UI 2.0, the layer of the Koreans for their Android terminals.

Android 10: list of mobiles that will update to the new version

This layer does not undergo major changes compared to last year on an aesthetic level beyond small tweaks that refine the appearance of elements and some interface controls that are important in terminals of this size.

Samsung's touch on Android 10 is on the side of extras such as the Edge panel, very refined and complete to be able to keep users in its ecosystem

We also have an interesting heritage from Samsung's higher-end range: the Edge panel. Its possibilities and customization have nothing to do with that shy extra from a few years ago and if you incorporate it into your terminal handling routine, it is quite practical.

The rest of the news is inevitably associated with those that Android 10 already brings. In the experience of users with the Samsung Galaxy A71, the most relevant thing is everything that has to do with the control gestures of the terminal interface, which Samsung finally recreates in a complete way. And successful. Also the dark mode or greater privacy and time management controls and use of the Android terminal.
Four cameras ready to shoot

The Samsung Galaxy A71 debuts in the mid-range of the Korean manufacturer's level with neither more nor less than with four cameras. Specifically, we are talking about four sensors, the main one being 64 MP. It is complemented by a 12 MP sensor (wide angle), a depth sensor to work in portrait mode (dynamic focus), and a 5 MP sensor for macro mode.

Normal Photo BlurWith the main camera we can achieve a very interesting bokeh effortlessly

Of this configuration there is a detail to assess: the choice of a sensor for macro mode at the cost of leaving some kind of telephoto lens along the way, a priori much more attractive in the media. Since by default, the main sensor takes images at 16 MP and for images at 64 MP you have to go to a specific option, zooming with this Galaxy A71 is not among the direct or optimal possibilities.

The camera interface is fast and comfortable to use. There is nothing especially different from the usual, and we can choose between the modes placed in a carousel. The carousel interface supports some customization of the modes so that we can keep those that we usually use the most in the foreground. In my case, it happens for example with the panoramic.

The Samsung Galaxy A71 camera surprises both the 64 MP main sensor and the choice of a macro lens instead of a tele

Pro mode has a presence in that carousel, but what we can do with it does not correspond to what one would expect. We can only modify the metering, the sensitivity, the white balance, and the exposure compensation, but not the shutter speed, for example. It also does not allow RAW shooting.

Regarding the image quality of the main sensor of the Samsung Galaxy A71, the manufacturer has opted for controlled versatility over excellence. In good light, the photographs we obtain maintain a good level of detail, noise is very well controlled and the dynamic range and colour are very correct in most situations.

General Image

As we have anticipated, the images we obtain with the main camera are 16 MP. To take advantage of all the MP of that sensor, you have to choose the 3: 4 (High) format, which leaves us the desired photos at 64 MP, although the results are less interesting overall than those adapted to 16 MP.

The HDR, which can be selected only from the general settings of the camera and not from the main screen, but does a good job and over a wide dynamic range.

When we move to take photos in low light with the main sensor, the overall quality drops in sharpness (although noise contained), and the night mode, with controlled effect and nothing exaggerated, can help us but sometimes at the cost of adding a sharpness that is artificial.

Example Night

We have found a pleasant surprise of the Samsung Galaxy A71 in the wide-angle lens. They are 12 MP images with good sharpness and level of detail, without major errors that make it difficult for us to take pictures with this camera. Its activation is direct in the interface and the change, fast.

The camera system of the Samsung Galaxy A71 is complemented by a large sensor for the secondary camera. The 32 MP has its own mode in shooting with the selfie camera but by default, the images that we will obtain are 12 MP.

The Samsung Galaxy A71 allows 4K quality video recording, although, in this mode, complemented by 1080p, one of the interesting extras of this terminal is not available: video stabilization. Video mode replicates the pros and cons we've seen in photography mode, both for videos in favourable lighting conditions and for night scenes.

the following samples are recorded in 4K, 1080p and slow-motion respectively, 1080p unstabilized and stabilized, followed by 4K and 1080p but at night.
Samsung Galaxy A71, the opinion

The most ambitious (and expensive) smartphone in the Samsung mid-range is a worthy evolution of the A family that is gradually consolidating itself as an option to take into account if we like the Samsung ecosystem and we do not want / can go to its range S.

The Samsung Galaxy A71 boasts a huge screen, of great quality as is guaranteed in these Samsung level devices and a design that is comfortable and visually attractive although it is on the edge of the requirement of the use of material more in line with the price we pay for the equipment.

That experience around the screen, with good performance, although lacking in optimization at the software level, ease of use and correct autonomy, contrast with the overall level of the cameras, which are only correct when in this range/price, a user already expects to go beyond the elementary.
